Instant gratification is a byproduct of unfulfilled highest values. When we are feeling unfulfilled we use quick fixes to create a sense of fulfillment, but as the name implies the effects are not long lasting. People use sugar binges, shopping sprees, excess social media, alcohol, escape into TV land, overtraining, etc. to create a sense of fulfillment only to discover that it didn’t work. But they keep repeating those patterns in a blind effort to get satisfaction that, in most cases, ends up being detrimental to their health.

This creates a disconnect between your mind and your body because your being is still searching for fulfillment. As William James said: “Nothing of the senses can ever satisfy the soul”. Instant gratification is a lower order effort to fulfill a higher order calling. We are who we are and we are driven to fulfill our values.
